
Formed from the remains of a village that existed two thousand years ago, the name “Emmaus Road” elicits curiosity. Some time after the crucifixion of Jesus, two men walked to Emmaus – a village that sat seven miles outside of Jerusalem. They had just witnessed their God crucified on a cross, beaten and bloody beyond recognition. His life – the things he had done and said – had given them hope that he would become the King of Israel and free them from the Romans’ rule. As they walked, Jesus (who had risen from the dead) appeared but was unrecognized by them.

Jesus explained every prophecy he had fulfilled from their religious texts and helped them understand what his real purpose was: to live a life of example, to go to the cross, suffer, die, and rise again – to pay the price for sin. This price is not what one person can pay for him or herself. Only by believing in Jesus can we be free from the penalty due to us.
